Ben Myers at Faith and Theology started a tidal wave by posting a list of the 20 books that have most influenced his theology. I can't pass up a chance to make a list of books.
Whne I read some of the other lists I thought, "Man, some of these guys are pretentious." Then I made my own list, and I had to think, "Man, this guy is pretentious too, but perhaps not as well read as the others." Anyway, here's my list:

Great list -- and I love your remark about the "pretentiousness" of all this!
You were quickly sliding down a pretentious slope until you got to your number 1. Excellent.
Echo the comment on Erlander. I feel that is a must read for anyone considering joining the Lutheran church, and even for life long Lutherans.
I was given the Erlander book when I first started going to an ELCA church. I'v eheld on to it because, even for some thing that looks like a coloring book, it is the best synopsis of Lutheran faith and life.
